Equipment

  • hand mixer
  • 9x9 inch baking pan
  • parchment paper

Ingredients

Homemade Crust

  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup all purpose flour

Apple Filling

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 5 apples peeled and sliced thinly
  • 3 tbsps lemon juice
  • 3 tbsps of flour

Crumble Topping

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup oats

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients for your crust until you have a consistent dough. It shouldn't be too sticky or oily. Refrigerate the dough while you prepare the other layers.
  • In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves for your filling and set aside.
  • Next in a separate bowl, mix together apples, your brown sugar mixture, and lemon juice (see image one).
  • Mix in the flour one tbsp at a time being mindful of how much liquid is in your mixture. If your apples contain a lot of juice, you will want to use all the flour to balance it out. If not, you may want to use less. Set aside once you have finished.
  • For your crumble, mix your brown sugar and nutmeg together in a large bowl. Add in the softened butter and cream together with a mixer.
  • Next add in flour and oats, mixing well with a wooden spoon until fully combined. Using your hands create crumbs from the dough for sprinkling (see image two).
  • Roll out the crust dough that you had refrigerated onto parchment paper until it is a 1/4 inch thick and is large enough for a 9x9 inch pan. Transfer parchment paper with crust to your baking pan for your first layer (see tip 3 and image 3).
  • Next evenly distribute your apple filling on top of the crust layer until your pan is filled (see image 4).
  • Finally sprinkle your crumbs on top as the final layer for your apple crumble (see image 5).
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until your crumbs appear golden brown and your filling is no longer runny (see image 6).
  • Cool for 5 minutes and then transfer onto a cooling rack. Do this by lifting the apple crumble out of the pan using the excess parchment paper.
  • Cut into 9 equal slices and serve with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
