Fried honey garlic chicken wings are my absolute favourite game day food. If there’s a big game on for the raptors, I am most definitely ordering wings that night.

But that’s been getting a bit pricey, especially during playoffs, so my mom suggested I make them myself. And it was so worth it!

My search for the perfect honey garlic chicken wings

As much as I still love the novelty of ordering game day food as part of the NBA playoffs experience, my honey garlic chicken wings are amazing!

And yes I know I’m a bit biased because it’s my recipe. But I promise you I can admit when my food experiments don’t turn out that well.

For example, the first time I made these fried honey garlic chicken wings, they were probably only a 5 out of 10. The sauce was great, but you could still taste the corn starch in the breading. Or at least I could.

The perfect chicken wing is crispy and saucy on the outside, and still seasoned and tender on the inside. And the wing sauce should be the only flavour you taste on the skin. The breading should just be there to provide crispiness.

So I went back to the drawing board and changed the breading to flour and garlic powder. And now I can say these fried honey garlic chicken wings are covered in crispy saucy goodness!

Save money and make wings at home

If you’re not convinced that you should make these by how yummy they are, then maybe I can convince your wallet. At St. Louis Bar & Grill, 2 lbs of chicken wings cost about $30. Buying 2 lbs of chicken wings at No Frills or your local grocery store is only about $9!

And yes, if you don’t have some of the sauce ingredients at home already, that’s some extra cost the first time you make these. But every time after, you are only spending $9!

Whereas you have to spend $30 every time you buy wings at a bar. That’s $21 you get to save and spend on something else. More if you take in the cost of delivery on these food apps.

And don’t get me wrong, I still love ordering wings from these places. But it’s better for my wallet if that’s only occasionally and not every time I get a craving.

Now on to the recipe!

How to make honey garlic chicken wings from scratch

Let’s start with what you need! Just in case you need to make a run to the grocery store.

Optional: sesame seeds for serving

How to make your fried chicken wings nice and crispy

First you want to start by washing your wings in water and then setting them aside in a bowl. Season the wings by sprinkling a teaspoon of salt, and mix them with a spoon or fork so they all get seasoned.

Next in a bowl or rounded plate, mix together your garlic powder and flour to serve as your breading for the chicken wings.

Then pour your oil into your large frying pan, until the oil is 1/2-1 inch deep. This is about 2 cups but it depends on the size of your pan. Preheat your pan to medium heat.

In the mean time, take each wing and coat it in the flour mixture. Make sure that they’re completely covered or else your honey garlic wings won’t be as crispy. Set them aside on a plate until your oil is ready for frying.

Breading Your Chicken Wings

To test if your oil is at the proper frying temperature, sprinkle a little bit of your flour mixture into the pan. It should sizzle in the oil, if it’s ready.

Once the pan is properly preheated, carefully add each of your chicken wings to the pan. You can do them in batches if your pan isn’t big enough. Allow them to fry on the first side for 5 minutes or at least until they’re golden brown on that side.

Place Your Chicken Wings in the Frying Pan

When your wings seem golden and crispy on the first side, flip each of them over using a pair of tongs. Allow them to cook on the other side until that side is golden brown as well.

Flip Your Fried Chicken Wings

In the mean time you can prep your wing sauce!

How to make honey garlic sauce

While you wait for your chicken to fry, mix together all your sauce ingredients in a small bowl until they’re well combined. Set aside your honey garlic sauce for later when your chicken wings are fried.

Honey Garlic Sauce

Mixing your wings in the honey garlic sauce

Once the wings are cooked, carefully remove them from the pan and place them on a plate lined with paper towel. Lower the heat of your frying pan to low medium heat.

Pour your left over frying oil into a bowl to dispose of later. Be very careful as the oil is very hot. You can turn off the heat and wait until it’s completely cool before doing this if you’re worried about splashing the oil.

How to thicken your honey garlic sauce

Place your chicken wings back in the frying pan at low medium heat. And pour your honey garlic sauce evenly over all your chicken wings. Flip them over in the pan to make sure they’re completely coated in the sauce.

Mixing in the Honey Garlic Sauce

Cover your pan and lower the heat. Allow the sauce to thicken and come to a sizzle or boil. Uncover the pan and continue to flip your wings in the sauce to coat them completely.

Turn off the heat and place your wings in a bowl or plate. Pour the excess sauce over top and sprinkle with sesame seeds before serving. Now enjoy your fried honey garlic chicken wings!

  • Frying pan with cover
  • Metal tongs

Crispy Fried Chicken Ingredients

  • 2 lb chicken wings
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Honey Garlic Sauce Ingredients

  • 6 tbsps soy sauce
  • 4 tbsps mirin
  • 2 tbsps bbq sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 3 tbsps honey
  • 6 cloves garlic minced

Optional for Serving

  • 1 tsp sesame seeds for sprinkling

  • First, sprinkle salt onto your chicken wings to season them. It helps to do this in a bowl, so you can mix them to apply the salt evenly on all your wings.
  • In a separate bowl or plate, mix together flour and garlic powder. This will serve as your breading.
  • Next pour your oil into a large frying pan and preheat it to medium heat. The goal is to fill your pan with a layer of oil 1/2-1 inch deep.
  • While you wait for the oil to heat up. Take each chicken wing and coat it with the flour mixture completely. Set aside on another plate until your oil is ready.
  • Test your oil, by sprinkling some flour in it. If it sizzles, then it’s ready. Carefully add each of your chicken wings to the pan. You can do them in batches if your pan isn’t big enough.
  • Allow them to cook for 5 minutes on the first side.
  • While you wait, in a small bowl, mix together all your honey garlic sauce ingredients, until well combined. Set aside for later.
  • Flip all your chicken wings, so they can cook on the other side for another 5 minutes. The first side should be crispy and golden brown. If not they may need to cook a little longer on the first side.
  • Once your chicken wings are crispy and golden brown on both sides, lower the heat of the frying pan. Carefully take out all your chicken wings using a pair of tongs and place them on a plate lined with paper towel.
  • Next carefully pour the excess oil left in your frying pan into a bowl to dispose of later.
  • Now that the excess oil is gone and the heat lowered, you can place your chicken wings back into the frying pan. Next pour the honey garlic sauce evenly over the chicken wings. Flip them to make sure they’re well coated on both sides.
  • Cover the pan and allow to cook on low medium heat for 5 minutes or until the sauce begins to thicken and boil. Afterwards, continuously flip the chicken wings to make sure they are well coated in the thick sauce.
  • Turn off heat, and place your fried honey garlic chicken wings on a plate for serving. Pour any excess sauce over top of them and sprinkle some sesame seeds before serving. Enjoy!
