It’s apple season! Happy September everyone; the beginning of the best baking season of the year. I don’t know about you, but to me Fall is incredibly magical. The air is filled with all those nostalgic scents that remind you of thanksgivings, halloweens, and Christmases gone by.
I thought I’d kick this season off with a friend’s favourite, Apple Crumble! Honestly, before this I had never made it before. Last year for her birthday we went apple picking, and then made apple raspberry crumble at her house. I just sat back and played with her dog, haha.
But when September arrived, I started thinking back to last Fall and all our adventures. The nostalgia made me crave it and I decided to experiment with my own apple crumble recipe.
It’s been a while since I baked with apples and I was really worried that my filling would be too runny or my crust too dry. The week before I had tried out a new peach pie recipe, and I had seriously underestimated the amount of liquid in the peaches.
Luckily it still tasted good, and I was able to learn from my mistakes for when I made my apple crumble. The baking life is all about trial and error and figuring out how to turn a failed product into something better next time around.
I think the best part about this apple crumble recipe is that it’s really easy to prepare. It’s just three layers of goodness in a pan. You have your crust, your apple filling, and your crumble topping.

It’s a great recipe to make with your kids to start this fall season with family. Without further ado here are my apple crumble tips:

Apple Crumble Recipe Tips
- Thinly slice and peel your apples. This just makes it easier to mix in your spices and evenly lay out your apple filling layer on top of the crust.
- It’s really important that the butter for your crumble is softened. So if you don’t have a lot of time to wait for your butter to come to room temperature, put it on a plate in the microwave for 5 seconds and repeat this until you can slice it with a butter knife easily. Don’t put it in for 20 seconds straight or else you’ll get a butter puddle in there.
- Roll out your crust dough on parchment paper to the dimensions of your baking pan (ideally it should be a 9×9 baking pan). This way you can line your baking pan with the parchment paper and your apple crumble crust at the same time. It also makes it easier for you to have a consistent thickness throughout your crust and take it out of the pan once it’s done baking.
- Mix the crumbs for your apple crumble with your hands. You can use a mixer or a wooden spoon at first, but to get that crumb shape and texture you want for an apple crumble, using your hands is best.

Cook Time: 35-40 minutes
Serves: 9

Homemade Crust
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- 1/4 tsp salt
Apple Filling
- 5 apples peeled and sliced thinly
- 3 tbsps lemon juice
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 3 tbsps of flour
Crumble Topping
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 cup oats
Tools
Recipe Steps
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients for your crust until you have a consistent dough. It shouldn’t be too sticky or oily. Refrigerate the dough while you prepare the other layers.
- In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves for your filling and set aside.
- Next in a separate bowl, mix together apples, your brown sugar mixture, and lemon juice (see image one).
- Mix in the flour one tbsp at a time being mindful of how much liquid is in your mixture. If your apples contain a lot of juice, you will want to use all the flour to balance it out. If not, you may want to use less. Set aside once you have finished.
- For your crumble, mix your brown sugar and nutmeg together in a large bowl. Add in the softened butter and cream together with a mixer.
- Next add in flour and oats, mixing well with a wooden spoon until fully combined. Using your hands create crumbs from the dough for sprinkling (see image two).
- Roll out the crust dough that you had refrigerated onto parchment paper until it is 1/4 inch thick and is large enough for a 9×9 inch pan. Transfer parchment paper with crust to your baking pan for your first layer (see tip 3 and image 3).
- Next evenly distribute your apple filling on top of the crust layer until your pan is filled (see image 4).
- Finally sprinkle your crumbs on top as the final layer for your apple crumble (see image 5).
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until your crumbs appear golden brown and your filling is no longer runny (see image 6).
- Cool for 5 minutes and then transfer onto a cooling rack. Do this by lifting the apple crumble out of the pan using the excess parchment paper.
- Cut into 9 equal slices and serve with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
