Two months ago I decided that my family needed an outdoor space that was all ours. And I needed a place with better lighting to take my food photos…

We live in a condo, and it does have a patio area, but because of COVID, it is now off limits to residents. So I turned my attention to our balcony. It’s a pretty large space compared to most, but we’ve kind of neglected it over the last decade.

In other words, it became an outdoor storage space for all the stuff, we never had the time to get rid of. It took some time, but I finally got it cleared out, and started on my masterpiece.

The goal was to create a cute outdoor space without breaking the bank. So I focused on limiting the number of items I was going to use to do this. Here are the four things you need to change your boring balcony into a Pinterest worthy space.

1. Cute Seating

Every space needs seating because if this is going to be a place where you’re going to spend quite a bit of time, you’ll need a place to sit. The main things you should focus on are size, affordability, practicality, and aesthetic.

You need to think about who’ll be using the space, and what they’ll be using it for. Are you going to be having meals out there? Taking naps? Reading, painting, or photography? How many people will be out there at a time?

Depending on the answer to these questions, you might decide on patio chairs, a couch, a bench, or even a day bed. I decided to go with a white bench because it seemed the most practical for my purposes and aesthetic.

You’ll also need to consider the size of your balcony. If it’s a smaller space, you may want to go with chairs because they’re modular, instead of a bench. You can move them around to fit properly in the space.

Here are some options to look into:

2. A practical and adorable table

If this is going to be a place where you’ll be spending a lot of time, you’ll need a table to put your snacks on and the other stuff you’ll take out there. You’d be surprised at what a table can do for a space. And how it will change the amount of time you’ll spend out there.

But what kind of table should you get? Coffee? Bar? Patio? Bistro?

Honestly, it mostly depends on the size of your balcony space first, then on what you’ll be doing out there. If it’s a small space, and you’ll just be having coffee out there, a bistro set should be fine.

But if you have a bigger balcony, and you’ll be having meals out there with the family or taking flat lay food photos, you’ll probably want something bigger, like a coffee or large patio table.

Once you’ve decided, it’s important to make sure the table you get matches your seating and the general aesthetic you chose for the space. You could always make it easy on yourself and choose a table and chairs set, but it really depends on if what you want comes in a set. Mine did not.

Here are a few options for you to explore:

3. Foliage

Decorate your balcony with fake foliage like this ivy wall

Foliage, nature’s decoration. I personally believe the easiest way to decorate an outdoor space without having to do a lot is by using plants you already have. But if you don’t have your own plants, then I suggest buying fake ones.

I know, putting fake plants outside, the IRONY. But listen to me, if you’re going to spend a lot of time out there and you don’t want to be constantly entertaining the attention of bees and other bugs, you’ll heed my advice.

In fact, if your space is relatively big, you can put your real plants on the far side, and your fake plants where you’ll be sitting. This way the bees still get what they need, and you don’t deal with an annoying neighbour on your balcony.

I decided to go with fake ivy, so I could make a cute photo background with an ivy brick wall. But depending on your aesthetic, you could get fake flowers, succulents, ferns, or fall leaves for the upcoming season.

There is really, so much you can do with fake foliage in a small space, and it’s so affordable. Check out some of the options, I’ve linked above.

4. Lighting

Twinkly lights make an outdoor space Pinterest worthy

Lighting is everything. It takes a boring, mundane space, and makes it magical. Whether that’s a chandelier over your dining room table, or a cute lamp on your desk. So why can’t it do the same for your balcony? Two words TWINKLY LIGHTS.

Why do you think everything feels more magical around the holidays? It’s the colourful twinkling lights on Christmas trees, rooftops, and storefronts. It makes you sigh like everything is perfect in the world while you spend all your money on other people.

But seriously lighting can do a lot for a space, especially for an outdoor space. It not only creates a great atmosphere, it also increases the amount of time you can use it since you can hang out there at night too. You may never leave your balcony after this.

The best part is that it’s an affordable way to decorate your balcony and turn it into a Pinterest worthy space. I’ve linked the lighting I used for my balcony here.

Finishing touches

If you have a bigger budget than I did, you can always add more to your space. I use the adorable pillow in the picture below and an outdoor throw when I go out there in the mornings to have my coffee or read a book.

But if you were looking for a simple and affordable way to spruce up your small balcony, these four things are really all you need. Hope you found this helpful! Let me know what you’ve done on the decorating front during quarantine in the comments below.
